This guide is for Blue Badgers members, carers, families, friends, colleagues and anyone who fancies joining a joyful, nationwide show of support. What is Purple Sock Day?
Every year on 3 December, the world marks the International Day of Disabled People (known by the United Nations as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities). The UN created the day in 1992 to promote the rights and wellbeing of disabled people across every part of life.
Purple Sock Day is a simple, cheerful way to join in. It was created by disability lifestyle social enterprise Parallel Lifestyle, and the idea couldn’t be easier: buy a pair of purple socks, then wear them with pride on 3 December.
BAM, the B Corp-certified bamboo clothing brand, has been making the socks with Parallel for six years now. Purple has become a colour of disability inclusion, so one small pair of socks says a lot.
Why Blue Badgers is joining in
Blue Badgers is all about celebration, reward and joy for disabled people and their carers. Purple Sock Day ticks every box:
- It’s a celebration – a day to be seen, share a smile and show the community at its brilliant best.
- It backs disabled talent – proceeds help D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people build their own businesses.
- It’s for everyone – disabled people, carers, siblings, grandparents, workmates and friends can all take part together.
Members can order their socks through Blue Badgers here.
Meet the socks
There are three designs to choose from this year, each priced at £8 a pair: Rails – a roll-top, striped everyday sock, Retro and Threads. All three come in UK sizes 4–7 and 8–11. BAM makes its socks from nature-based fibres, and soft breathable fabrics.
Where your money goes
This is the bit that makes your purple feet extra special. 50% of the proceeds from these socks go to the Purple Sock Day Fund, which supports D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent entrepreneurs and helps supported employment.
The principal beneficiary is The British Association of Supported Employment (BASE). BASE represents the supported employment sector across the UK, helping individuals into work and helping employers make inclusive recruitment part of how they plan.
This year’s Purple Sock Day Ambassador is Victoria Jenkins, founder of the adaptive fashion label Unhidden.
How to join in on Thursday 3 December
Taking part is easy, and there’s no wrong way to do it. Here’s a quick checklist:

- Say why – a line about who you’re wearing them for can spark lovely conversations.
A purple-tastic stocking filler
With 3 December falling at the start of the festive season, purple socks make a thoughtful little gift that gives twice: once to the person who unwraps them, and again to disabled entrepreneurs.
- A treat for a carer, sibling or grandparent.
- A Secret Santa present at £8 a pair.
- An advent-season surprise to wear on the day itself.
Pop a pair in your basket alongside your other Christmas shopping, and they’ll be ready for the big purple day.
